Enfamil Gentlease uses partially broken-down proteins to reduce the gas and crying that often follow feeds with intact milk proteins.

Parents reach for it when a standard formula leaves a baby arching, pulling legs up, or refusing the bottle midway through. The change in protein size makes the formula easier for some immature digestive systems to handle without altering calories or basic nutrients.

How the protein change works
Regular cow-milk formulas keep long protein chains that can trigger extra fermentation in the gut. Gentlease cuts those chains into smaller pieces before packaging. The result shows up as fewer spit-ups and shorter crying spells for babies whose only issue is protein sensitivity, not a true allergy.

The formula still contains lactose as the main carbohydrate, so it does not help when lactose itself causes trouble. It also keeps the same iron and vitamin levels found in routine formulas, which means no extra supplementation is required unless a doctor orders it.

When the switch shows results
Most parents notice any improvement inside three to five days if the problem is mild protein-related fussiness. Track wet diapers, stool pattern, and total crying time each day. A drop in evening fussiness or fewer burps that sound painful counts as progress.

If symptoms stay the same after a full week, the cause likely sits elsewhere-reflux, overfeeding, or a different intolerance. Continuing the product past that point adds cost without benefit.

Limits that matter
Gentlease does not treat cow-milk protein allergy. Babies with blood in the stool, widespread rash, or poor weight gain need a different product, often an extensively hydrolyzed or amino-acid formula. The partially hydrolyzed proteins in Gentlease remain too large for those cases.

It also costs more per ounce than routine formulas. Families who see only marginal change may decide the price difference does not justify continued use.

How to test it safely
Start with a small can rather than a bulk purchase. Offer the new formula at the usual feeding times and keep the same bottle nipples and feeding position. Note any change in bowel movements; some babies pass softer stools at first.

Check with the pediatrician before the switch if the baby was born early, has ongoing medical conditions, or takes medications. The doctor can rule out other causes and confirm the trial length that fits the baby’s age and growth chart.

If symptoms improve, keep using Gentlease until the baby reaches the age when most children outgrow mild protein sensitivity, usually around six to twelve months. At that point many families move back to a standard formula without return of symptoms.
