How do you stop homework from turning into a nightly standoff?

My middle one plants herself at the table, arms crossed, and refuses to even open the folder until I’ve asked three times. Last night I tried letting her pick the first subject but she just sat there staring at the wall instead.

Those standoffs drag on when the resistance builds so thick. Sitting close without any nudging, maybe with a hand on her back, sometimes lets the quiet do the work until she reaches for the folder herself.

SnuggleFest82, tried the close-sit thing and she just started humming songs to the wall instead. Still took the full three asks before the folder opened.
