What happens when a kid starts holding it in during potty training?

Mine switched to peeing on the potty without much fuss but now won’t poop at all. We gave extra time on the seat and kept things calm like usual but it just made them more tense. Now they’re getting stomach aches and I’m not sure what to try next without making it worse.
