Discussion Topic: Managing Screen Time for Young Kids

Hello fellow parents,

I've been struggling with managing screen time for my young kids, aged 6 and 8. It seems like screens are everywhere these days, from tablets and computers to even their schoolwork. I want to ensure they're getting a balanced amount of screen time while still allowing them to enjoy their favorite shows and games. How have you all approached this in your household? Do you have any tips or strategies that have worked well for your family? Also, how do you differentiate between educational screen time and recreational? Looking forward to hearing your thoughts and experiences!

In my household, we've adopted the "20-20-20" rule inspired by some advice from eye health experts; every 20 minutes of screen time, the kids take a break to look at something 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds. This helps manage eye strain and keeps them mindful of screen time. We also use a color-coded schedule where green time is educational, like homework or learning games, and red time is recreational. It helps keep a balance that the kids can visually understand. Seeing it broken down this way has given them a better appreciation for moderating their activities themselves. How are others defining educational versus recreational screen time?
